Minna Rose Chung, a Korean-American cellist and Professor of Cello at the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada is renowned for her contributions to performance and pedagogy. She is the co-author of the internationally acclaimed CelloMind: Intonation and Technique, a groundbreaking pedagogical work praised for its profound exploration of intonation. Strings Magazine (April 2018) described the method as a “dense and fascinating treatise focusing not just on the left hand, but almost exclusively on the aspects underpinning the most minute gradations of intonation... taking written pedagogy to a new level.”
Since 2008, Dr. Chung has been the visionary behind “Project Rio”, a transformative multi-collaborative initiative inspired by Rio Cello (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), the world’s largest free music festival. This innovative program has brought together Canadian and Brazilian musicians and artists, offering opportunities for performance and masterclasses that foster cross-cultural exchange and artistic growth.
Her pedagogical expertise has earned her numerous national and international accolades, and her work has been highlighted in Strad Magazine’s “Teaching & Playing” feature (April 2018). Among her current projects is a forthcoming publication aimed for advancing cellists, exploring the nuances of playing in higher positions with the thumb, in a newly revised edition of The Ultimate Fun in Thumb Position—a second collaboration with CelloMind co-author Hans J. Jensen.
Minna is an active performer with several esteemed ensembles, including the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Borealis Piano Trio, and the Clara Piano Trio. Both piano trios tour extensively, offering recitals and lecture performances at prestigious international music conferences, with a focus on the art and interpretation of chamber music. She is a faculty guest artist at international music festivals in Brazil, most recently a performance and teaching engagement at FEMUSC, the world’s largest Latin American
music festival held in Santa Catarina. Over the summer months, Dr. Chung has been a regular guest artist and faculty cellist at Rushmore Music Festival (Rapid City, SD), The Meadowmount School of Music (Westport, NY), Rio International Cello Encounter (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), The Heifetz Institute (Staunton, WV), and Rosamunde Summer Music Academy (Winnipeg, MB).
